2012 Accent on Architecture Community Grant Recipients Shine

AAF is pleased to announce our Accent on Architecture Community Grants program. AAF’s Accent on Architecture Community Grants assist local, non-profit organizations in producing innovative design-education programs for K-12 students. Since 1998 Accent on Architecture Community Grants have supported creative programming initiatives including television programs, symposia, design workshops, and teacher education. They enhance the visibility and public understanding of architecture and strengthen relationships between communities and local design groups.

The Design Connection Partnership Pilot (DCPP)
Architecture Resource Center Inc., New Haven, CT
DCPP is an architecture and design-based STEM1 project serving 475 at-risk urban fifth grade students, teachers, and math coaches from eight (K-8) New Haven CT Public Schools (NHPS).

Dallas Neighborhoods Project bcLAB
buildingcommunityWORKSHOP, Dallas, TX
bcLAB is a 6-week summer program that encourages young neighborhood residents to engage with and advocate for their community through design.

The Art of Architecture
Dallas Center for Architecture
The Art of Architecture is a juried art competition and exhibition for middle and high school students which encourages students to study the visual aspects of architecture and express their observations creatively.

Columbus Design Camp, Columbus IN
Columbus Education Coalition, Columbus IN
The Community Education Coalition of Columbus Con proposes to offer an introductory design studio for primary and secondary education students in the summer of 2012.

Stormwater on the Peninsula
Gulf Coast Community Design Studio, Biloxi, MS
Students will learn how architecture and design influence natural systems; students will help create an analysis tool for the City that evaluates local stormwater infrastructure.

Boston Kids, Boston Architecture
Learning By Design in Massachusetts, Boston, MA
Boston teachers and architects will engage Boston schoolchildren in community design projects connected to core curriculum areas and based on the architecture of their city.

Terrace Town 2012
Monona Terrace Community Programs and Endowment Fund, Inc., Madison WI
Terrace Town teaches elementary students, teachers, and the public how cities are planned, what makes a sustainable city, and how to improve their communities.

2012 Merit Citation Recipients:

Architectural Awareness Program  Career Development Council, Inc., Elmira, NY. This program is an educational experience that teaches principles of architecture, giving students hands-on classroom opportunities and contact with professional architects.

Center for Architecture Foundation, New York, NY
studioENYA is an annual design competition and mentoring program that cultivates a community of architecture college and/or field bound high school students and their instructors.

Urban Investigations
The Center for Urban Pedagogy, Inc. (CUP), Brooklyn, NY
Urban Investigations (UI) are design education programs for public high school students that explore the inner workings of New York City’s environment, architecture, and infrastructure.

Community Housing Partners, Christiansburg, VA
MY DOWNTOWN will design/deliver an educational workshop targeting at-risk youth encouraging acknowledgment and appreciation of architecture and provide planning and design tutelage.

King-Post Roof Truss Interactive for Undertaker’s Corner
Foundation for Historic Christ Church, Irvington, VA
Grant funds will support design and fabrication of a king-post roof truss that can be dismantled and reassembled using mortise-tenon joinery in architectural education programs.

Outdoor Community Seating and Recreation Area at PS20
Henry Street Settlement Abrons Art Center, New York, NY
Students will design an outdoor play area at PS 20, encouraging community gathering and play in an under-utilized space on school grounds.

Sustainability Seen from the Eyes of Elementary School Children
HMC Designing Futures Foundation, Ontario, CA
HMC’s Archlab team will partner with Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District to develop and implement a series of sustainability workshops for elementary school children.

Architecture Elective Course Materials

KCDC Enviro Quest

Neighborhood Explorers Program, which educates students about the history, architecture, and urban design of their East Harlem, NY neighborhood. The program encourages students to observe, appreciate, improve, and sustain their community.

City Vision
National Building Museum, Washington, DC
Established in 1993, CityVision involes 60-70 students in a semeste-long program in which they apply principles of city planning and design to help solve neighborhood problems.

My City, My Home
Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans, New Orleans, LA
My City, My Home is an arts-based residency that will teach 150 students about the architecture and architectural history of New Orleans.
