25th Annual AAF Accent on Architecture Gala Highlights

On Thursday, April 24, 2014, 500 national leaders in design, government, education, and the media gathered in Washington, D.C., for the 25th annual Accent on Architecture Gala at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium. Presented by the American Architectural Foundation, the Gala celebrates excellence in design leadership and this year featured four honorees:
The Joseph P. Riley Jr. Award for Leadership in Urban Design
The Honorable Carolyn G. Goodman, Mayor of the City of Las Vegas
and
The Honorable Oscar B. Goodman, Former Mayor of the City of Las Vegas
Presented by the American Architectural Foundation
in association with The United States Conference of Mayors
The Riley Award is issued each year to a mayor whose commitment to excellence in urban design has helped elevate the quality of life for that mayor’s constituency. The Goodmans were honored because during their consecutive administrations, they have helped lead Las Vegas into an urban renaissance focused on downtown revitalization. “The Goodmans have had the foresight and drive to turn the city of Las Vegas into a cultural destination,” said USCM CEO & Executive Director Tom Cochran. “They both have had the vision and ability to recognize that arts and culture attract youth, and youth attracts jobs and economic growth.”
Of the Goodmans’ work in Las Vegas, AAF President & CEO Ron Bogle said, “One of the great challenges of successful city design is having consistent, committed civic leadership to support and guide design innovations from concept through implementation. Not only have the Goodmans brought that type of leadership to Las Vegas themselves, but they have helped to establish a design culture among Las Vegas city leaders that bodes well for the future.”

STUDIOS Architecture has designed innovative offices for such iconic clients as Bloomberg, Google, and Dow Jones, while Novartis has commissioned significant buildings for its campuses worldwide from more than 15 renowned firms—including Gehry Partners and Herzog & DeMeuron—in Basel to Fumihiko Maki, Weiss/Manfredi, and Rafael VIñoly in Hanover, New Jersey, to Toshiko Mori and Maya Lin in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The Keystone Award

AAF’s Board of Regents presents the Keystone Award annually to an individual or organization from outside architectural practice for exemplary design leadership that improves lives and transforms communities.
According to AAF President and CEO Ron Bogle, Hon. AIA, “The Chicago Architecture Foundation is a treasure not just for the residents of Chicago and visitors to that great architectural city, but for all those working around the world to enrich lives through architecture and design. CAF’s leadership and commitment to helping fellow architecture and design educators and organizations succeed epitomizes what it means to be a great partner.”
The 2014 Accent on Architecture Gala featured speeches from the Mayors Goodman, Mr. Lobdell, Mr. DeGarma, and Ms. Osmond as well as videos on the urban renaissance of Las Vegas, Novartis’ collaborations with several of the world’s most renowned architects, STUDIOS award winning designs, and Chicago Architecture Foundation’s inspiring cultural mission.
The evening also included a brief 25th Accent on Architecture Anniversary retrospective featuring personal reminisces of prior Galas by AAF Regents Ted Landsmark, M.Env.D., J.D., Ph.D., Assoc. AIA, D.F.A. (Hon.) and Bryce Pearsall, FAIA, LEED AP, and 2014 AIA President Helene Combs Dreiling, FAIA, and AIA Executive Vice President and CEO Robert Ivy, FAIA.
The 26th annual Accent on Architecture Gala will take place in Washington, D.C., in spring 2015.
