AAF to Convene China-U.S. Design Summit

The American Architectural Foundation, in association with United Technologies Corporation (UTC) and Otis, has been invited by the Chinese Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MOHURD) and the Chinese Society for Urban Studies (CSUS) to convene six sessions at MOHURD’s annual Eco-cities Conference. Scheduled for July 16–18, 2013, in Zhuhai, China, the conference draws an audience of more than 1,000 Chinese mayors, government officials, developers, and city planners.

Session topics include:

  • The Status and Trends of Global Urbanization
  • The Objectives and Design of New Types of Urbanization
  • Differences between Urbanization in the U.S. and China
  • A Tale of Two Cities: Eco-cities in the U.S. and China
  • Technologies and Standards for Eco-districts
  • Policies and Actions for Eco-districts

UTC and Otis are not only longstanding supporters of AAF but also outstanding knowledge partners for this event in particular, with their substantial expertise on sustainability and urbanization in both China and the United States. In addition, for these sessions AAF is drawing on the knowledge of some of the world’s top design, engineering, and development firms, including Gensler, Arup, Jacobs/KlingStubbins, Cannon, and Leo A. Daly. These firms will join AAF, UTC, and Otis in representing the U.S./Western perspective at the conference, while CSUS will bring to the table some of the most innovative and accomplished thinkers in city design from China.

A detailed report of the proceedings will be posted on this website in mid-August. To be notified of the report’s release, we invite you to sign up for AAF’s mailing list and RSS feed. Our hope is that both the event, and the report to follow, will be catalysts for sophisticated and authentically bilateral dialogue on the future of cities in China and the United States.
